Feldafing is on the west shore of the Starberger See and is directly opposite Rose Island. There is a ferry service operating from Feldafing to historic Rose Island from May to October. Feldafing is used by windsurfers and kite surfers and its shallow waters make it a great spot for beginners although it is only worth going here when easterly winds are blowing. There is no real season although the summer months are very crowded and probably best avoided.
There is a tiny beach here with a small grassy rigging area so when it is busy it is best to launch in the water. There are also several trees around the shoreline which can cause potential problems. You can get here by driving along the west coast of the lake to Feldafing where you can park. A short stroll across the golf course takes you to the water.
The winds are quite often frontal westerlies and these do not work for the area at all. The best time to come is when easterlies are blowing, with the best directions being east north east, east, and east south east but these don't happen too often. The winds are best during fall and spring. The water is clean and flat to choppy depending on the wind speed and direction. There is a shallow area for about 50 meters which is good for beginners to practice on. The water temperature is around 20 degrees in the summer months with an air temperature of between 20-30 degrees. The winter gets very cold and surfing is only possible with a thick wetsuit, gloves, mask and shoes.
There are plenty of fish restaurants and beach front cafes around the whole of lake Starnberger and you caan find a few shops and places to eat in Feldafing itself. For a larger choice of shopping, bars, restaurants and accommodation you are best to drive to nearby Munich which also has plenty of night life to keep you entertained.
Avoid the summer months which are way too crowded and be respectful with beginners for the remainder of the time. Watch out for ferries crossing to Rose Island.
